Salsa
The UK SALSA scene is vibrant and surprisingly well serviced. Unlike
ballroom socials, at a Salsa social people dance with as many partners as possible. Mixing styles and moves with both friends and
strangers. Its never boring. The dancing is energetic and full of
personality. It has many combinations of steps, turns, arm moves,
spins, holds, drops and styling. There is always something new to see
and learn.
Salsa originated in Cuba. It developed from a Cuban music style called Son. Social dancing to live music has always been popular in Cuba. One band leader introduced modern brass, piano and African Conga drum to the normal Son line up, creating the distinctive Salsa sound. This pumping high energy music was accompanied by topical hard edged lyrics. This gave rise to the Mambo dance style. Mambo transferred to the USA with increasingly bigger band sounds. Popularity of and demand for the big band sound began to decline in the 1960s. New York record label Fania records revived the music with a new and hard edge image and popular appeal. They returned to the pump and drive of the earlier music with modern influences. Fania re-branded the music as SALSA.
Salsa now has styles from many Latin American countries, USA cities and worldwide followings. It is multi-ethnic, multi-national music and dance movement that speaks to the social sentiments of its followers and guarantees them an adrenaline charged night.
